Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Italy: a situation report for December 15, stating that Allied artillery is active in the Garigliano Sector; that Allied tanks are coming under artillery and air attacks in the Mignano area; that Allied attacks on Monte Lungo, Monte Sambucaro and Monte Pantano collapsed; that there is local Allied penetration near San Michele A Foce; that there are repeated attacks on Orsogna; that the 1st Canadian Infantry Division with the 3rd Canadian Infantry Brigade have been identified in the North Coastal Sector; and that the 1st U.S. Armoured Division is reported to be in the Mignano area; a report from the 26th Panzer Division, on the 76th Panzer Corps for December 15; that Allied attacks continued following a successful breakthrough bringing about the collapse of the main German defence line; and that Allied thrusts continue on Orsogna; the 65th Infantry Division reports continuous Allied attacks on Orsogna; the 29th Panzer Grenadier Division report uniformed Italians are in the Mignano area, on December 15; the 94th Infantry Division reports a quiet morning, on December 15; of the 29th Division being withdrawn and perhaps replaced by the 5th Division; that the 65th Infantry Division is being replaced by the 334th Infantry Division; that the 1st Parachute Division is being replaced by the 305th Infantry Division; of the 1st Parachute Division moving into the 90th Division's Sector; a report from the Commander in Chief (CinC) for the South-west (Army Group C) on developments in the Cassino position and of the west coast sectors of the 94th Infantry Division and the 11th Air Corps; battle reports for December 16, from the 14th Corps, detailing that an Allied attack on Monte Lungo in the 29th Panzer Grenadier Division's area in battalion strength was successful; that attacks on Monte Sammurco were repulsed; that an attack on Monte Corno is at a standstill; that an attack on Monsignardo in the southern sector of the 44th Infantry Division was thrown back; and that the 6th Parachute Regiment suffered serious casualties from heavy artillery fire; on the Balkans: that guerrillas encircled north-east of Mrkalje are attempting to break out, with relieving attacks anticipated in the Zvornik area; on Albania: that no further fuel for motor transport is to be allocated in December, with the greatest economy to be practised, on December 12; an abbreviated general naval summary for December 15: that on the Atlantic coast of France, there is a large fire aboard the hospital ship Aquilea, with its stern run aground through flooding; that convoys of merchant vessels under escort were sighted off the west coast of Italy; that there is increased Allied air activity on the Italian west coast; and that there was another air raid on Civita Vecchia; that the unescorted passage of small ships to Lemnos and Volos has been banned because of the presence of Allied submarines, with Arados aircraft being requested to combat the submarine threat; that operation PENITENT is to be supported by one or two U-boats, with the operation postponed for a few days, from December 15; a report from the Air Officer Commanding in Chief (AOCinC) for the Centre for December 16, that Allied aircraft raided Innsbruck approaching from the Bolzano area; and of scattered bombing raids on Cologne and in the northern part of the Rhine Westphalian industrial area.
