Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Southern Europe: the German Naval Command (GNC) in Italy reports an increased danger of Allied landings in the Rome area, on October 21; GNC Italy reports that there is more shipping in Naples than would be required merely for supplying troops, on October 21; the Commander in Chief (C-in-C) South's situation report for October 18 including tank strengths and the progress of inundations south of Rome; of an indication that the 16th Panzer Division is to leave the 10th Army, on October 19; on the transfer of guns from the C-in-C West to the C-in-C South, on October 19; on personnel losses of the 16th and 29th Divisions during September, on October 19; of evidence of an increased Allied submarine threat in the Mediterranean, on October 13; and on the immediate dismantling of a 12 metre bending roll, believed to be for U-boat construction, which is to be transported from Leghorn to Germany via Marseilles on October 22; on South-east Europe: two situation reports for October 20 for Croatia and Dalmatia; that the losses and interception of large German ships in the Adriatic are likely to make necessary the use of small craft, on October 20; on the fuel situation in the Adriatic with particular reference to impending extremely important army operations, on October 20; of the results of an Allied raid on Athens, on October 22; of the transfer of flak regiment staff from Constanza to Ploesti, on October 20; that a minor fire at Ploesti is thought to have been due to leaky pipes, on October 22; of damage to industrial works caused by Allied air-raids on Hanover and Westphalia, on October 19; of Allied raids on October 20; and of an alteration in the nomenclature of German Air Force (GAF) Fighter Command, on October 16; on the Russian Front: that all available ships are to be sent at once in ballast to Sevastopol, with loadings in Romania to cease, on October 22; an appreciation of Russian intentions in the Gomel sector, for October 21; that the reconnaissance results of the 4th Air Fleet for October 21 reveal lively Russian ferrying over the Dnieper; of preparations being made for the evacuation of airfield equipment from southern Russia to Poland during the winter, on October 22; a detailed report of operations on the southern Russian Front for October 20; that the railway route via Snamenka is expected to be unusable from October 21 owing to the threat of Russian attacks; and a report for October 20 covering all fronts for German military attachés in the Balkans, making mention of a Russian penetration 40 km south-south-west of Gomel.
