Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Southern Europe: a report from the Hermann Goering Division for October 8, detailing an exchange of artillery fire with Allied forces, and its intentions to hold the Volturno Line; a German Air Force (GAF) situation report for October 8; the 14th Panzer Corps reports the north bank of the Volturno to be free of the Allies; that the 76th Panzer Corps reached the Teja line of resistance; of a strong Allied attack in front of the 26th Panzer Division being repelled; air reconnaissance reports of Cagliari, Olbia, Maddalena, Bastia, Taranto and Bari harbours; of identifications of the 3rd and 45th American Divisions on the wings of the Allied attack with the 1st Canadian Division in the centre; on anticipation of Allied landings north-west of Termoli; of Allied attacks in the 29th Panzer Grenadier's sector being halted; on the location of the Battle HQ of the 16th Panzer Division; of operation TRAGIC/LEOPARD being in jeopardy for a lack of landing craft on Cos and available paratroops, according to a signal from General Mueller on October 9; of Battle Group Mueller being ordered to carry out operation TRAGIC despite the loss of an Olympos convoy, the operation being considered of decisive importance, and with the GAF to give its full support, on October 7; a report from the German Navy in the Aegean for October 7-8, of Kalymnos being captured and garrisoned by the Germans; of units involved in Operation TRAGIC being alerted to the presence of Motor torpedo boats in the Kos channel; on preparations for guaranteed Stuka and fighter operations from Gadurra and Maritza airfields respectively, on orders from the 10th Air Corps, on October 4; of the German minelayer the Bulgaria being sunk in the Aegean, on October 8; on instructions for propaganda and press releases regarding references to Badoglio and the Italians on October 7; that the Advance Detachment of the 65th Infantry Division is on its way to Pescara, on October 8; a situation report for October 6 from the Department for Foreign Armies, West, signed by Freiherr von Roenne, including identifications of British Army units south of Foggia and in the Termoli area, of U.S. units in Sicily, and of Moroccan and Senegalese forces in Corsica; on counter-partisan activities in the Balkans; on Allied air raids on German positions in Greece; of the German ship the Fridania being torpedoed off Cape Promontore, with all sea traffic being suspended in the Pola area, on October 7; of instructions for the despatch of propaganda material required for broadcasting, on October 8; and of instructions for the disarming of the carabinieri on the authority of Kesselring and Graziani, the removal of the officers of all the Italian defence forces, and the threat of the severest reprisals against the officers and the families of officers found not to be conforming, on October 6.
