This file includes the following reports on Southern Europe: a report from the 10th Army for October 7, detailing hard fighting on the Southern Volturno; that the Hermann Goering Division and the 76th Corps are under increased Allied pressure; that the 16th Division is making slow progress; and that the 26th Panzer Division is facing an Allied spearhead; German Air Force (GAF) reconnaissance reports on the Dodecanese, the Aegean and the Peloponnese, describing air attacks on an Allied naval force; and of a signal from the 10th Air Corps relating to operation LEOPARD/TRAGIC, which is unidentified but possibly similar to operation EISBAER against Cos, on October 8; Naval Headlines, covering the 18-strong Rossbach Group of U-boats being ordered to occupy a new reconnaissance line in the Atlantic; that Ancona harbour is to be blocked by scuttling the Bice and Luigi Martini and the yacht Savoia; and that the Soviet destroyer leader the Kharkov and two others were sunk by Stukas south east of Feodosia; from the Japanese ambassador in Berlin, on interviews with Ribbentrop and Hitler, and their respective views on the war in light of the Italian defection, on October 4; and from the Irish minister in Rome: on an appointment to the Fascist Republican Government, and Cavallero's death following his refusal to become Minister of War, on October 4.
