Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file contains a message from C to the Prime Minister (PM); and the following reports: that the 14th Corps anticipates an Allied attempt to take the Volturno position, on October 5-6; a 26th Panzer Division report for October 6, noting outposts being withdrawn before an Allied attack supported by artillery; of the 29th Panzer Grenadier Division withdrawing in the centre under Allied pressure, on October 6; of the 16th Panzer Division's intention being to renew the attack on Termoli, that it called for an air attack on Allied armour and the destruction of a bridge, but that the attack was called off following an Allied breakthrough; Battle Group Mueller reports that mopping up operations on Cos are continuing, with 886 English and 3000 Italians being taken prisoner, and 89 Italian officers being shot, on October 6; that the Hermann Goering Division intends renewed thrusts by its Divisional Battle Groups at Capua; that the reinforcement of Air Defences in Italy is under consideration, on October 10; of the positions reached by the 16th Panzer Division late on October 6; situation reports for October 4 and 5: that the 14th Panzer Corps' withdrawal is going according to plan despite strong Allied armour pressure; that the rearguards of the Hermann Goering Panzer Division inflicted heavy losses on the Allies; that the rearguards of the 76th Panzer Corps were driven back by an Allied attack north of Benevento; that the artillery of the 29th Panzer Grenadier Division is engaging the Allies near San Bartolomeo; that an Allied attack on the right wing of the 1st Parachute Division was repulsed near Volturara, at San Marco La Catola, east of Celenza Val Fortore; that the 16th Panzer Division attacked Allied forces near Termoli; that a high-explosive device was detonated against Rome Broadcasting House power station; of the removal of prisoners from Italian prison camps; of Allied air attacks on the 14th Panzer Corps; on arrangements for the protection of rail installations and of the unloading of troops at Frosinone from air attacks; of ructions for the disposal of captured Italian seaplanes; that the Commander in Chief of the German Air Force (CinC GAF) requires the speeding up and development of Y Service and aircraft reporting in northern Italy to be linked to the Fighter Command Organisation of Jafue Austria OSTMARK; of a request for a labour force from the German side of the frontier to repair the trunk line from Udine-Villach; and a military report of Italy and the Balkans from Oberkommando des Heeres (OKH) Berlin for October 10; and Naval Headlines, covering U-boats being attacked by Allied carrier-borne aircraft north of the Azores; and Ostaia and Fiumicino being declared useless for unloading purposes, with Civita Vecchia said to be better.
