Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on South-east Europe: of severe criticism of the German Air Force (GAF) by the Air Officer Commanding (AOC) the GAF in Romania, made in the presence of ambassadors and senior officials, on September 29; and a GAF operations report in the eastern Mediterranean which includes that a guerilla village in Crete is to be dive-bombed, on October 1; on Southern Europe: Kesselring reports that Hitler's orders were to yield as little ground as possible in Italy, especially on the east coast, on October 1; two reports on the Goering Division's intentions, for October 1; four battle reports for October 1 including little activity on the west coast, and noting many Allied tanks being in the centre and moving towards the west coast; a situation report in Italy, for October 1; that Berlin orders a short-term transfer of bomber units from the 2nd Air Fleet to the 3rd Air Fleet to enable an attack on an Allied convoy off Lisbon, on September 30; that unit KG 100 is to be used on October 2 and 3 to attack an Allied convoy sighted west of Lisbon, from October 1; a detailed report on an attack by unit KG100 on shipping targets in Ajaccio, on October 1; two reports on the plans of the evacuation of Corsica; a naval situation report for all theatres, for October 1; from the chief of the police delegation in Ponta Delgada, relating that army officers in Horta criticise the leaders of the Portuguese government and military deficiencies, on September 18; and that he complains of the commander at Angra, on September 24; Naval Headlines; and SHARK, reporting success on September 28 and 29.
