Description

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Southern Europe: that the 76th Corps is to withdraw during the night of September 30; of the 2nd Air Fleet's orders for the night of October 1 and 2; a German Naval Command (GNC) in Italy situation report for October 1; the 2nd Air Fleet reports that the shipping of motor transport from Corsica is expected to be finished on about October 8; that the 2nd Air Fleet's reconnaissance forces were insufficient to carry out a photographic reconnaissance of Algiers, on October 1; that the German Air Force (GAF) in Berlin approves a suggestion by the General Staff of the Army that women should not be employed further south than the Po line in Italy, on September 29; and a Foreign Armies West review covering Italy and the Balkans, which includes many indications of increasing partisan activity, on September 30; on South-east Europe: of German operations in the Cyclades on September 30, stating that Andros is now occupied by German forces; of a large leather factory in Budapest being burnt down, with sabotage suspected, on September 29; and on the Russian Front: a situation report for the area north-west of Kiev, on September 30.
