Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Southern Europe: of the German Air Force's (GAF's) plans for Italy, on September 18; on indications of the movement of Flak forces to northern Italy, on September 19; that the 22nd Flak Brigade requests that the withdrawal of heavy batteries should not take place for the time being, on September 19; that all aircraft flying over northern Italy are to drop leaflets over large towns, on September 18; of two blocking lines being constructed by the Germans in southern Italy, on September 18; on completion of the details of the Hermann Goering Division's new defensive position, on September 20; a 29th Panzer Division situation report of September 19 including its admittance of heavy losses in men and material; of the first indication that the 90th Panzer Grenadier Division is being subordinated to Army Group B, on September 18; the German 14th Corps' situation report for September 18 which described their fuel situation as very strained; a 10th Army estimate of the Allied losses at Salerno, of a failed Allied objective and that the renewal of Allied attacks is expected, on September 18; that the evacuation of Teora is intended, apparently by September 22; of orders for the transfer of Flak forces from Foggia to northern Italy, on September 18; and of a reference to a German officer commanding the 1st Italian Air Fleet, on September 19; on South-east Europe: that German war correspondents are to refrain from attacking the Italian royal house, and to provide photographs of those Italians who join German troops, on September 13; that the production situation has necessitated that some mobile flak guns are to be withdrawn from Germany, Western Europe and Italy in order to supply the Russian and other fronts, on September 19; on the behaviour of German crews in captivity, on September 18; from the Turkish minister in Madrid, describing German pressure on Laval, on September 15; and from the Japanese ambassador in Istanbul, on Soviet-Turkish relations, on September 17.
