A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Southern Europe: a ground situation report for the Salerno area, on September 17; that the 76th Panzer Corps was ordered to begin its withdrawal on September 17 while leaving strong battle outposts; that the Allies are reinforcing according to the 14th Panzer Corps, on September 17, with numerous air attacks in the line of the communication area; that Elba surrendered to a German force with the evacuation of Sardinia, on September 17; that the evacuation of equipment from Corsica is proceeding, on September 17; and that the Germans are anxious to determine from the 2nd Air Fleet's reconnaissance whether the Allies have bombed Rome airfields, on September 17; on South-east Europe: of fighting in Rhodes and an Italian surrender on September 11, from September 17; from the Japanese ambassador in Berlin, giving the views of a contact on the Italian situation, on September 13, which includes a reference to Mussolini reaching Munich with an ensuing meeting with Hitler; an intelligence report from a contact, on September 14; describing German plans for forming an Italian administration, on September 15; and detailing the German employment of Italian labour, on September 13; from the Portuguese minister in Budapest, on a German threat to Hungary, on September 10; and on Hungarian desire to secede from the tripartite pact, on September 12; from the Italian ambassador in Tokyo, noting Japanese attempts at mediation in the Russo-German conflict, on August 7; from Ribbentrop, in Berlin, marking a German denial of peace negotiations with the Soviet Union, on September 14; from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Berlin, on the Eastern Front situation, as of September 7; and from the Greek ambassador in Ankara, on Turkish relations with the Soviet Union, on September 7.
