Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Southern Europe: that the German Sea Transport Office in Bastia was attacked by the Italians, on September 11; that the German forces in Bastia are outnumbered by the Italian Forces who are supported by armour and artillery, on September 11; that General von Senger, at the Battle HQ for Borgo-Bastia, is to send an ultimatum to the Italians to compel the handing over of Bastia and the disarming of civilians, on September 11; on a heavy Flak unit being ordered to transfer to south of Bastia to support a German attack, on September 11; of the German occupation of Corsica being extended northwards, on September 11; that Ajaccio is blockaded by De Gaullists, said to be planning an attack on F-Apparatus, and that a detachment of an SS Company was sent to assist the garrison, on September 11; of Gaullist guerrillas occupying a former SS Brigade HQ in south-west Corsica, on September 11; that small boat action from Leghorn is planned against Elba for September 12; that the Allies are in Battipaglia, with the 16th Panzer Division counter-attacking, on September 10; a report for September 10 from the 1st Parachute Division, possibly in the Foggia area; the German Air Force (GAF) report a fuel shortage is delaying bringing up elements of the 76th Corps to the Salerno Front; of Kesselring's orders for ruthless employment of all forces of the three services against the Allied bridgehead in the Naples Salerno area, on September 11; on the withdrawal of Flak units from Calabria, amid fuel shortages, on September 10; that the 22nd Flak Brigade is to be with the 76th Corps on September 11; on the withdrawal of the 26th Panzer Division from Calabria, on September 10; a German Intelligence Service assessment of the situation in Italy, noting identifications of Allied forces, and a successful Allied landing on Rhodes, on September 11; of fighting in Milan being cleared up by SS Units, on September 10; the German Naval Command in Italy report Pola to be open to German shipping, from September 11; that two Italian hospital ships carrying English PoWs left Venice, on September 10; that the passenger ship Conte di Savoia is believed to be preparing to leave; an Italian Command in the Aegean report from Rhodes, noting available Italian forces to be north of the line from Mixi-Cape Vodhi; and that the defence of the Rhodes port area is to be continued against a probable attack, but that prolonged resistance is impossible in light of the superior German equipment, on September 10; GAF reports of activities over Rhodes; from the German police attaché in Rome, on conditions in the City, on September 11, stating that no foodstuffs have arrived for two days, that the population is without food, and that the population is hostile to Germany; and on the Abwehrkommando from Frascati planning to rescue Mussolini, on September 11.
