Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Southern Europe: the Commander in Chief (CinC) South reports on the evacuation of Calabria, that the most southerly depot is now north of Cosenza; and that supply goods are being transported north by the Army from the Naples area and from the area from Taranto-Brindisi mainly by sea, on September 7; a report for September 10, noting successful German counter attacks, and that Battiglia was taken with 200 prisoners; a 2nd Air Fleet report for September 10, stating that Salerno has been occupied by the Allies; that the 86th Panzer Corps was withdrawn according to plan; that the Allied bridgehead is about about 3 km deep' that an Allied Air Landing Division is in Taranto; that the Italian troops in Rome capitulated; and that German troops are in Rome; of the 26th Panzer Division's intentions for a withdrawal into Castrovillari, on September 9; of German troops being surrounded in Piombino by Italian forces, on September 12; of Italian ships fleeing Patras being forced to return to harbour by a German Air Force (GAF) air attack; of an Italian destroyer being sighted in Leros undergoing repairs, on September 11; an Italian garrison on Samos is reported to have handed over its administration to the Greeks, on September 11; and of the Germans disarming the Italians on Romanian territory with help from the Romanians, on September 9; Naval Headlines, covering that a Battle Group returned to Altenfjord, on September 10; on the German - Italian situation; that Elba is considered by the Germans as hostile; and that the Italian 7th Cruiser Division, while constantly under air attack, detached destroyers to pick up the survivors of the Roma; on the Russian Front: that the Soviet forces break through south-east of Pavlograd under constant attacks from the 1st Air Corps; and that the 4th Panzer Army is coming under a strong Soviet attack, on September 9; from the Swedish minister in Tehran, that the German people are watching the course of the Italian surrender and may follow their example; and a German Intelligence Official in Turkey's comments on the effect of Allied bombing raids on Germany, on September 11.
