Description

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Southern Europe: a situation report from Bastia, that the Italian military authorities in Corsica consent to rearming the German troops and Naval Command, on September 9; Italian and German accounts of the situation in Bastia; on Italian reinforcements of men and tanks, on September 9; the German Air Force (GAF) Liaison Officer in Corsica reports from Bastia that the Civil Authority was taken over by Gaullists on September 10; that an Italian fleet sailed from Maddalena heading north-west; that the Germans are to get the ferry working at high pressure, on September 9; of continuous Allied landings in the Gulf of Salerno; that German withdrawals in Calabria have continued according to plan; of Allied shipping sightings; of a major air raid on the Foggia area; of GAF operations over Calabria and Apulia; of low-level attacks on the Salerno landings; that a heavy Allied air raid on Capua destroyed two road bridges, and damaged a rail bridge, on September 9; on German operations in North Italy, noting resistance in Parma and Mantua; that the 2nd SS Panzer Corps is active in Verona, Cremona and the area from Reggio - Parma; that the 24th Panzer Division Battle Group is set up at Ferrara, is mopping up the area from Bologna - Verona, and cleaning up the area from Milan - Turin; of the 2nd SS Panzer Corps' mopping up operations in North Italy; on the Coastal Sector, that Genoa is in German hands, with intentions to mop up Milan, Turin, Vicenza, Padua and Treviso, on September 9; that a Flak unit in Sardinia was warned of imminent landings by sea and air; that the Italians are under orders not to resist and to prevent offensive action by the Germans, on September 10; of the Italians ploughing up an airfield in the Foggia area, on September 8; that the intentions of the GAF in the South-east include attacks on Italian ships attempting to escape and support of the advance of the army into Albania if required, on September 9-10; and GAF Staff in Greece report that the Italians, having capitulated, wish to hand over their aircraft and ships to the Allies, with this to be prevented at all costs, on September 9. This file also includes a summary of German secret intelligence reports dated September 9: on Himmler's instruction for the release of Mussolini; and on instructions regarding prominent fascists; Naval Headlines, covering an Italian Admiralty report of the Germans marching on Rome; and that Admiral de Courten called on the Navy to abide by the terms of the Armistice; Naval Headlines, covering that German Naval Command is to move to Northern Italy via Frascati; that Captain U-boats are to go to Toulon; that the Germans were unable to stop the Italian cruisers Garibaldi, Duca D'Aosta and Abruzzi sailing from Genoa; that the German Chief of Staff at Spezia was ordered to try to persuade the Italian Fleet to surrender voluntarily; that a GAF air raid sank the Roma, and hit the Italia; on Leghorn, Porto Fino, Viareggio, Civita Vecchia, Nettuno, Bastia, Porto Vecchia, La Maddalena, Taranto, Brindisi and Bari; that the Rhodes authorities were ordered by the Italian Admiralty to let German units leave; that Italian shipping in the Aegean is to be taken over and the Italian Armed Forces are to be disarmed; that all Italian ships in the Sevastopol area are to be taken over; and that the Sea Defence Commandant in Ukraine is to evacuate; and from the Japanese ambassador in Berlin, relaying the German government's view of the Italian capitulation, and intentions to set up a Fascist administration in northern Italy on September 9.
