A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Southern Europe: a report from the 2nd Air Fleet on September 9, on a German undertaking round Rome is going according to plan, on continuous defensive fighting against a landing fleet in the Gulf of Salerno, and on no real penetration being made by the Allies; the German Naval Command in Italy report the transfer of the 305th Infantry Division to the area north of Leghorn, on September 9; that a German attempt at MUFFIN in Porta Fino, in the Genoa area, failed on September 9; that German forces occupied Italian naval and military positions in Civita Vecchia and Porto Vecchia on September 9, with Italian officers put under guard; of the 3rd Panzer Grenadier Division advancing south-eastwards round Lake Bracciano, and being hampered by destroyed bridges, on September 9; German Field Security in Milan report fighting between SS units and Italian troops, and that the barracks in Verona are occupied, on September 9; of the 2nd Air Fleet's orders for Italian aircraft attempting to join the Allies to be shot down, on September 9; of orders to German Flak Command in North Italy to disarm the Italians, confiscate Italian motor transport, secure Italian fuel dumps, and secure or destroy Italian aircraft and war equipment, on September 9; of a request from the 2nd Air Fleet for motorised Flak units for the protection of the Brenner route, on September 9; that the Italian Taranto Fleet without the cruiser Scipione is to arrive at Malta on September 9; of the Italian battleship Roma being sunk by German aircraft, and that the Italia is hit but not seriously, on September 9; that the harbour works at Bari have been taken by German troops; the Italian authorities in Taranto report a German withdrawal from Bari following an agreement with the Italian Army Command, with vessels in the harbour being sunk, blown up or damaged, on September 9; that the 29th Panzer Grenadier Division is in the Castrovillari area, on September 8; of orders for the withdrawal of the German Air Force (GAF) ground organisation at Calabria, on September 9; of Maddalena being occupied by German forces, with the Italian Admiral Brivonesi under German control, on September 9; of German forces having trouble in Maddalena, being ordered to hold at all costs, and calling for reinforcements, on September 9; that Admiral Brivonesi is being held as a hostage by the Germans, who are seeking a guarantee from the Italian Government for an unhindered withdrawal to Corsica of the German troops assembled in Northern Sardinia on September 9; and of the GAF in Sardinia launching air attacks on an Italian naval formation west of Bonifacio that was en route to Maddalena, on September 9.
