A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Southern Europe: that Operation MUFFIN failed in Genoa, Garibaldi, Abruzzi, and Duca D'Aosta, and six destroyers escaped, on September 9; that Operation MUFFIN at Leghorn was in the course of operation at 0800 on September 9; German and Italian reports on the situation in Bastia on the attempted implementation of MUFFIN, on September 9; of the German Chief of Staff at Spezia being instructed to induce Italian warships to surrender, on September 9; of Allied forces being within 10 miles of Catanzaro, on September 8; the Italian Admiralty reports that German troops on Sardinia intend to transfer to Corsica, on September 9; a German Air Force (GAF) sighting report of and permission to attack, 18 warships presumed to be Italian, on September 9; of Ventotene Island being occupied by the Allies, on September 8; of the German and occupied territories' frontiers being closed to prevent the exit of Italian nationals on the orders of the Foreign Minister, on September 9; and German intelligence reports to Himmler on Italian peace proposals; and on the admission of Mussolini to hospital for an operation, on September 8.
