Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Southern Europe: that the 15th Regiment is to break off contact and withdraw; that the 71st Regiment is to remain on the line from Nicotera - Laureana Di Borello and become subordinated to the 26th Panzer Division, on September 4; of Kesselring's orders for flying personnel operating in Calabria to be transferred north of the line from Scalea-Castrovillari-Taranto, and for naval attacks on the Allied landing fleet and warships bombarding the coast, on September 4; of a shortage of locomotives and personnel on coastal railways in south eastern Calabria, on September 4; that the German sea transport authorities are evacuating Vibo Valentia, on September 5; of an Italian Admiralty assessment of the Allied aircraft carriers and auxiliary carriers operating in the Mediterranean, noting a concentration of Allied troops in Oran undertaking landing exercises, on September 5; a photo-reconnaissance report of a large concentration of Allied shipping being in Oran, on September 4; of Italian Admiralty instructions for submarines and motor torpedo-boats of the Naples Command to be at a half-hour's notice, on September 5; of the Italian tanker Dora C being torpedoed south of Brindisi, with the whole sea area being closed on September 5; and a 2nd Air Fleet report for September 2, detailing large Allied formations of shipping being sighted, increased Allied air activity, and Bologna, Bolzano, Trento, Prato and Pontedera being bombed; on South-east Europe: a report of September 1 from Army Group E on operations in Greece, describing an Italian motor transport column being attacked by Greek guerrillas north of Chalkis; and on the Russian Front: that the Air Officer Commanding (AOC) the 8th Air Corps is unable to promise more than limited air support, on August 29.
