Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Southern Europe: the 29th Panzer Grenadier Division report an Allied landing east of Melito, and that Cannitello is in Allied hands, on September 3; of Italian troops being engaged with Allied commandos in the Cape Spartivento area, on September 3; the 2nd Air Corps report that Allied forces landed behind German lines, on September 3; of German Air Force (GAF) operational orders for attacks on Allied naval forces shelling the coast, and on landings behind the German front, on September 4; a situation report for September 3, noting the continuous arrival of Allied paratroops, that they are advancing from the west coast into the interior, and heavy landing craft traffic in the Straits of Messina; the Italian 31st Army report the movement of 100 tanks north east of Reggio, on September 3; of Crotone airfield being seriously damaged in an Allied air raid, on September 3; further reports of Allied air raids on airfields in Calabria, on September 3; of orders for air fields south of Naples to be prepared for demolition, on September 2; that the German naval authorities in Taranto state there to be no German Army units in the areas of Foggia, Bari, Taranto or further south, from August 28; that the Italians inform the Germans that the Italian naval units at Taranto are to transfer to Trieste or Pola, on September 4; of a German signal from Rome expressing the need for the German Army in Italy to be increased in strength, for it anticipates that Italy will drift towards anarchy, on August 28; from the German Intelligence Service in Rome, on a likely attempt to replace Badoglio with Marshal Caviglia, and to replace the King with the Crown Prince's son, making Caviglia Regent and seeking an armistice with the Allies, on September 3; of a French protest to the Italians over the theft and robbery of the submarine Poincaré, on September 3; on the Russian Front: a GAF report, detailing that the 29th Army was supported by the 4th Air Corps in a break through towards the west; that bombers of the 8th Air Corps are supporting the 58th Panzer Corps and 42nd Army Corps; and that Romanian Stukas attacked Soviet tanks and troops west of Krymskaya, on August 31.
