Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports: a BONIFACE report from Brigadier Hollis to the Prime Minister (PM); on Southern Europe: of the transfer to the mainland of staff at Messina, and of the Straits' defences being prepared for August 15; that German Air Force (GAF) units in Calabria are to avail themselves of empty transport space to send back stores in military value, on August 12; of provisions for disposing of aircraft fuel in the event of an evacuation of Calabria and Apulia, on August 10; of special mines for harbour demolition being sent to Messina on July 26 and 27, dated August 12; that losses of aircraft fuel by Allied action are considered to have assumed intolerable proportions, on August 12; and that a hospital ship is required to transport away from Gioia Tauro a daily average of 600 sick and wounded, on August 9.
