Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Southern Europe: that the German Air Force (GAF) are seeking confirmation of the use of dive bombers by the RAF in Sicily, on August 1; that the transport of personnel and equipment to Corsica is to be resumed, on July 30; of there being no fuel for E-boats at Crotone, on August 1; of a lack of 20mm ammunition preventing the effective engagement of Allied fighter bombers in the Straits of Messina, on July 30; that the hospital ship Toscana arrived at Messina, on July 31; that the Messina authorities were informed to prevent desertions of Naval and dockyard personnel, on July 31; that the routing of rail traffic through Foggia is expected to be possible by about August 3; a GAF photo-reconnaisssance report, for August 1; of the intentions of the 2nd Air Corps for August 2; of orders for prospecting for alternative landing fields on Corsica, on August 1; that paratroops are en route for a new operational area on the Gulf of Salerno, on July 30; that lists of names, addresses and particulars of families of Italian troops in part of the 7th Legion in Catania are required by the Italian Admiralty in Rome, and an order that any shirkers of duty will be dealt with severely, on July 31; of German units in Sicily carrying out ferrying practice in the Straits of Messina, on the night of July 31-August 1; on problems of a shortage of motor transport in Southern Italy, on July 29; that the 14th Panzer Corps informed the 2nd Flak Regiment Goering that it is to remain in the Naples area for a lack of transport, on July 30; and on the transport of personnel in Northern Italy being blocked, on July 29; on South-east Europe: Italian troops are reported to be selling weapons to rebels in occupied parts of Croatia and Serbia, on July 28; and of the intention to subdivide the area of the Commander in Chief (CinC) for the South East into two Army Groups, on July 28; and on Germany: of leave to Hamburg and its environs being stopped for GAF personnel in neighbouring airfields, on July 29.
