Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Southern Europe: that ammunition for southern Sardinia is expected at Olbia, on July 26; a Sicily situation report from the 14th Panzer Corps for July 27, including identifications of Allied formations; a Sicily situation report for July 28, giving a delineation of the front line; and that the German Naval Command in Italy is to transfer an E-boat flotilla from Taranto to the Aegean without informing the Italian authorities, on July 28. This file also includes the following correspondence: from the Belgian minister in Lisbon, describing the Portuguese reaction to the changes in Italy, on July 29; from the Portuguese ambassador in London, noting reactions to Mussolini's resignation and Victor Emmanuel's proclamation, on July 26; the Bulgarian minister in Budapest quotes the Hungarian Foreign Minister's statement on Mussolini's resignation, on July 26; from the Irish minister in Rome, on events in Italy, on July 23-24; from the Japanese ambassador in Istanbul, on the progress of the war, and Mussolini's resignation, on July 26; and from the Portuguese minister in Bucharest, on the Romanian reaction to Mussolini's resignation, on July 26.
