This file includes the following reports on Southern Europe: of the naval authority in Messina being informed on July 23 of the Italian high command's intention to defend the north-eastern region of Sicily to the last; that supply stocks in Palermo are considered by the Germans to have been destroyed, on July 22; of an Allied raid by heavy bombers on Foggia railway station on July 22; that Italian E-boats are to operate against Allied units sighted making for Acireale, on July 23; that an Axis steamer was sunk, on July 23; and of Allied raids on Crete, on July 23; and on South-east Europe: a German secret service report of an intended Allied attack on Crete, from July 17.
