Description

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Southern Europe: of the naval authority in Messina being informed on July 23 of the Italian high command's intention to defend the north-eastern region of Sicily to the last; that supply stocks in Palermo are considered by the Germans to have been destroyed, on July 22; of an Allied raid by heavy bombers on Foggia railway station on July 22; that Italian E-boats are to operate against Allied units sighted making for Acireale, on July 23; that an Axis steamer was sunk, on July 23; and of Allied raids on Crete, on July 23; and on South-east Europe: a German secret service report of an intended Allied attack on Crete, from July 17.
