Description

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on South Europe: of German Air Force (GAF) orders for July 15, including reconnaissance to establish the front line, and that paratroops are to fight their way out; of a message from Goering to the Hermann Goering Division, victory or death, on July 11; that the 29th Panzer Division was transferred to Sicily, on July 12; the Germans near Caltanisetta report increased enemy artillery activity, on July 14; that Trapani airfield is serviceable for Ju52s, on July 15; and that the Hermann Goering and 15th Panzer divisions are to reconnoitre a new defensive line, on July 14; Naval Headlines, covering that the battleship Luetzow may break out into the Atlantic to operate with U-boats; from the Chinese charg� in Berne, on the German and Italian loss of morale, on July 7; and from the German ambassador to the Vatican, describing a conversation with the Pope on German-Vatican relations, on July 5.
