This file includes the following reports on the Mediterranean: a report of June 20 that no units of the Hermann Goering Division were to cross the Messina Straits en route to Sicily before late on June 21, with the operation having been interrupted by the declaration of Alert Stage 3; that mechanised transport of the Hermann Goering Division was ferried across the Straits of Messina to Sicily on June 19 despite an Allied raid on Reggio that day; a personnel return for German Air Force (GAF) units on Sardinia totalling some 7500 men, on June 19; of a suggestion that at least some personnel from the Hermann Goering Division were in Sardinia, as of June 19; of contingency measures to protect Omodeo reservoir in Sardinia from Allied air attack, on June 19; on the status of GAF airfields in Sardinia; that Elmas has been mined and would not be used in future; of an Allied air attack against Reggio harbour and railway, on June 19; a GAF air and sea situation report for June 19, including German agent reports of some 250 Allied ships leaving Oran, Arzeu and Moscagnem on June 18; and of Allied air attacks against San Giovanni and Reggio on the 19th; and from the Portuguese ambassador in London, on the likely progress of the war as seen from London and the British insistence on unconditional surrender, on June 17 - the ambassador recommends no Portuguese démarche to Britain in favour of special treatment for Italy.
