20 Jun 1943

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on the Mediterranean: of German Air Force (GAF) attacks against a large Allied convoy heading east from the Bone area, on the night of June 19/20; and of the commander of GAF Close Support in Sicily being identified as at June 20; from the Portuguese ambassador in London, a report from Lisbon dated June 19 on a démarche handed to the Portuguese Foreign Minister by His Majesty's (HM) ambassador in Lisbon on June 18, presumably requesting certain Portuguese cooperation to aid the Allied war effort; the Foreign Minister refers to a note that he had earlier sent to the Portuguese ambassador to present to the British government; the Prime Minister (PM) asks C to obtain a copy of this note; and C speaks to the Foreign Office who will let the PM have it.
