This file includes the following reports on the Mediterranean: of Allied air losses over Sardinia, on June 18; that a German Air Force (GAF) unit in Sardinia goes to increased alert status, on June 19; of a successful Allied air raid against Messina, on June 18; of GAF successes against an Allied bomber formation off Olbia, on June 18; and a GAF summary report for June 19, including German agents' reports on Allied movements; on the GAF: on claims of individual GAF unit successes against Allied aircraft during May 1943, dated June 3; on the Mediterranean/Balkans: a review of German troop movements as of June 15; a detailed summary of Axis combat operations in the Balkans on June 15; that Operation SCHWARZ, the extermination of Mikhailovitch's forces south-east of Sarajevo, was completed by June 15; that the next major operation is to be carried out in mid-July; and GAF plans for the next month in Yugoslavia; from the Japanese minister in Madrid, a report of June 17 following talks with the Italian ambassador who had stated that the Axis situation was critical and that Japan should persuade Germany to make peace with the U.S.S.R. - the minister replied that this would be impossible; from the Japanese ambassador in Berlin, a report of June 17 on Hitler's continued refusal to meet with the ambassador to hear Japan's views on how Germany should now be conducting its war strategy; on the Atlantic: of detailed instructions from Berlin on June 17 for a plan to move U-boats in safety through the Bay of Biscay, including brevity codes to be used in communications; and the Prime Minister's (PM's) minute to the First Sea Lord (ISL) with a reply asking for ships to be made available to foil the German plans.
