This file contains a message from Brigadier LRC Hollis for the Prime Minister (PM); a BONIFACE summary; and the following reports on the Mediterranean: on the German Air Force (GAF) in the Balkans being resubordinated from Kesselring to GAF Southeast, on May 20; that Kesselring is to visit Corsica on May 24; that Kesselring complains of a lack of essential supplies for a GAF unit on Sardinia and the gross misuse of air transport, on May 22; of GAF aircraft failing to give recognition signals over Catania, on May 23; on the cargoes of 2 Axis ships heading for Sardinia, on May 21; and that the 1 Panzer Division, moving through Roumania and Bulgaria, has the strength of 18000 men, on May 21. This file also includes a message from the Code and Cypher School (CSS) to Washington for the PM, on May 24: that the Japanese and Italian governments are surprised at a German plan to launch a powerful offensive on the Eastern Front, on May 19; and a communiqué from the Turkish ambassador in Rome, that the Germans think the Allies will demand passage through Turkey on May 21.
