This file contains a message from Brigadier LRC Hollis for the Prime Minister (PM); a BONIFACE summary; and the following reports on the Mediterranean: that the German Navy orders increased vigilance in Rhodes and Leros, on May 19-20; that Kesselring orders measures to improve aircraft serviceability, on May 20; of the German Air Force (GAF) at Grosseto's losses in an air raid, on May 20; of an Allied air attack on GAF Trapani, on May 19; that Hitler orders the GAF to use air bombs against Allied bombers, on May 19; on GAF cooperation with ground forces in the event of Allied landings on Sicily or Sardinia, on May 20; that the German secret service expect Allied landings on Sardinia, Corsica and France, from June 1-5; and on indications of a move of the 1st Panzer Division from France to Greece, on May 20. This file also contains a message from the Code and Cypher School (CSS) to Washington for the PM, on May 22, including the following reports: from the Japanese minister in Shanghai, on the Chinese military and economic situation, on May 17; for the Commander in Chief (C-in-C) in the Mediterranean, that Laval is to order the scuttling of the French fleet, on May 22; that Admiral Duquesne was ordered to scuttle the French fleet, on May 22; and a message from Admiral Duquesne, on May 21; a further message from the CSS to Washington for the PM, on May 22: that Laval has ordered Admiral Duquesne to scuttle his ships; and lastly from the CSS to Washington for the PM, on May 22: a Japanese diplomatic telegram from Shanghai; and that Admiral Duquesne is to take his fleet to a French West African port, on May 21. This file also contains a message from the PM to General Alexander, on May 22, saying that he is looking forward to his visit to North Africa.
