This file includes the following reports on North Africa: the Tunis Air Corps' report for March 20 and their combat plans for March 21; that Allied forces are advancing from the Gafsa area, while all is quiet on the Mareth Front; an Army Group Africa report for March 18, that German forces are to be pushed into the main defence line of the Italian Young Fascists' Division overnight on March 18/19; that the 21st Panzer Division is to move up behind the Mareth Front by March 19; and that poor weather is preventing almost all air activity; and a German sigint unit report for March 19 with details of the interception of communications of at least two U.S. divisions; on the Mediterranean: that heavy rain makes German flight operations from Sardinia unlikely, on March 21; and of plans on March 20 for the deployment of up to 25 German Air Force (GAF) bombers to Sardinia on March 21 for a torpedo attack against an Allied east-bound convoy of 30 vessels which had been sighted by the Italians; Naval Headlines; from the Japanese envoy to the Vatican, a report of March 17 to Tokyo and repeated to Japanese representatives in Berlin, Ankara, Madrid, Berne, Italy and France, on rumours of peace moves in the Vatican, an improvement in Italian morale, and the effects of Allied propaganda; and a report of March 9 following discussions with the Italian ambassador on Ribbentrop's visit to Rome and Archbishop Spellman's visit to the Vatican; and following discussions on the Tunisian campaign casting doubts on the reliability of U.S. troops.
