This file includes the following reports on the Russian Front: the Central Army's situation report for March 14, noting that the Soviet forces are probably awaiting the completion of the thaw period before launching a large-scale attack; Naval Headlines; from the Japanese ambassador in Ankara, a very lengthy assessment as at March 11 on the future progress of the war, highlighting potential splits between the western Allies and the Soviets and between the U.K. and the U.S., noting the need for Germany to harden its attitude and strengthen its propaganda if the Axis cause is to win the day, and that more countries are now doubtful of a German victory; from the Turkish military attaché in Madrid, a report of March 10 following discussions with a Spanish general who had just returned from the Russian Front, describing the dangers of a Soviet victory, and the implications for the U.K. and the U.S.; from the Apostolic delegate in London, that he was questioned by the Vatican on March 6 for details of the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster's call for British Catholics to pray for Russia; and replies on March 13 giving the Archbishop's words verbatim and suggesting that his statement was influenced by prayers initiated by Pope Pius XI; and on North Africa: a signal from the Prime Minister (PM) to Generals Alexander and Montgomery on March 16 asking for any news of Operation PUGILIST that could be incorporated into his speech to the nation on the evening of March 21.
