Description

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following correspondence: a summary of reports for the Prime Minister (PM); from the French ambassador in Tokyo, on the Japanese crisis, on January 27; from the French ambassador in Ankara, on a prospective meeting between Turkish leaders and an unidentified person, on January 30; the Japanese ambassador in Berlin argues for closer cooperation with Germany, as of January 26; from the Portuguese minister in Bucharest, on the situation in the Balkan states; and on panic in Romania at the prospect of Russian advances, on January 29; from the Turkish ambassador in Washington, on rumours about the Casablanca Conference, on January 29; from the Turkish ambassador in London, on the movements of Roosevelt and Churchill after the Casablanca Conference; and a report of a planned Allied offensive in Tunis under Alexander, the assistant to Eisenhower, on January 29; and from the Turkish ambassador in Tokyo, on Japanese public opinion and anxiety, on January 30.
