Description

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on North Africa: a Battle Unit Gabes report for January 31, detailing a heavy attack on Sened station by U.S. forces supported by armour and artillery; that the north-east part of Gabes airfield was attacked by U.S. aircraft; and that all available Stuka aircraft are engaged at Sened to relieve the situation; that a German reconnaissance unit was ordered by the 5th Panzer Army to give up the Sened Station and to move back to Maknassy; a situation report for January 30, covering the Tripoli-Tunisian frontier area; that the 5th Panzer Army informed the Panzer Army Africa of a concern over the rail line from Sousse via Sfax to Gabes, suggesting that Italian railway troops be used to guard the stretch from Sousse to Sfax, on January 30; that the 90th Light Division requests further ration delivery to Zuara, while considering that it may hold out for some days, on January 30; a German Air Force (GAF) report for January 31, describing the Allied forces closing up on Zuara; that the 21st Panzer Division repulsed an Allied thrust against the defile near Faid; and an Allied air raid on Gabes airfield; of detailed plans for an attack by the 5th Panzer Army on February 2, in the Kairouan area; that the General Staff of the Army were unaware of the attachment of Oberst Bayerlein to General Mancinelli, Chief of Staff of the new Italian Army A; and that the organisation of the chain of command is not yet settled; on the Russian Front: of motor transport fuel for the 17th Army in the Caucasus being transported by air, on January 29; that the Chief of the German General Staff is to arrive in Simferopol on January 29, with the Chief of Staff of Army Group A also expected; of arrangements for transport by air of motor transport fuel for Krasnodar, and for the evacuation of the wounded from Krasnodar to Kerch, on January 30; and that GAF Ju ambulance aircraft are flying to Kuban to carry motor transport fuel, on January 31; Naval Headlines of January 31, covering that a German naval formation including the Hipper arrived at Trondheimsfjord on January 30; that Grand Admiral Doenitz is to continue in control of U-boat warfare; that four destroyers carrying German troops arrived at La Goulette, on January 30; that the Germans' intention is to use Hammamet anchorage by February 8; and that the Italians believe the Allies intend to carry out an operation against Bizerta in the near future.
