Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on North Africa: a situation report for January 29, noting Allied reinforcement in the Sabrata area; that the Axis rearguard is to the east and south of Zuara; that Army Battle HQ is moving to an area south east of Mareth; and that the Battle HQ of the Fliegerfuehrer is at Medenine; of preparations for the evacuation of Zuara, with supply staff and troops leaving late on January 28; of an Allied air raid on Tunis, on January 22; of an order from Bastico to the Panzer Army under Rommel subordinating Group Mareth to the Panzer Army, excepting Centauro and the 50th Special Brigade - at the same time Bastico relinquished his command; on Yugoslavia: that the Italian 5th Army Corps is cooperating in operation WEISS to prevent the escape of insurgents to the south-west, on January 22; on the Russian Front: that Soviet forces are bringing up reinforcements into an area of penetration south of Krasnodar, and increasing pressure in the area between Kuban and Yeya; lists of locations held by Soviet and German forces respectively, on January 28; that a Soviet attack supported by tanks was repulsed in the Abin sector; that the German front line is running within 10 miles of Maikop, as of January 28; a 4th Air Fleet report for January 29, noting that Soviet forces have crossed the Donets south of Krushilovka, about 15 miles west of Kamensk; that the German 17th Army is to organise and supervise crossings from the Taman Peninsula to Kerch, on January 28; of the 4th Air Fleet's orders for laying demolition charges on airfields prior to evacuation, on January 28; a situation report for the morning of January 29, describing bitter fighting in Stalingrad's central town area, and that Soviet forces are gaining ground in the central and southern sectors; that Hitler orders supplying Stalingrad as the first priority for bombers, on January 29; of the 4th Air Fleet's orders for the evacuation of Rostov, on January 29; and that the 4th Air Fleet was reinforced by named Flak Units from Germany's defences, on January 28.
