A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on North Africa: a report for January 28 of an Allied advance on a 15 km front in the south east; of an Allied air raid on Sfax, with the damage and casualties not yet fully assessed; the German Air Force (GAF) report little change in the Allied situation to be revealed by air reconnaissance; that the Axis rearguard is east of Sfax; that Rommel was informed by Cavallero that all troops, apart from the 21st Panzer Division, must be available for the Mareth position; and that a mobile Battle Group is in the process of formation in southern Tunisia, on January 21; of Mussolini's orders for the delaying of the Allied advance, because of the situation in Tunisia, on January 27; of orders from Cavallero to Rommel placing General de Stefanis under his command for the defence of the Mareth position; that the Centauro Division is to be subordinated to the Panzer Army under Rommel; and that the Livorno Division is to be transferred from Italy in support, on January 27; and of GAF orders for air raids on shipping in Algiers harbour with alternate targets included, on January 28.
