Description

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on North Africa: the Panzer Army under Rommel's day report for January 23, stating that an Allied force has been established in the area of Bir El Ghnem; and that the Army is withdrawing its rearguard to Zauia; that Rommel is pressing for strengthening of the Mareth position, and rapid reinforcement and equipping of the Army, on January 23; that the intention is to hold Zuara until January 27 to ensure its evacuation; a summary of the supply and ammunition position, as of January 23; that preparations for the destruction of the mole and pier at Zuara have been completed, on January 23; and of the locations of units of the Panzer Army under Rommel, on January 24; on Northern Europe: that an airborne torpedo attack against an Arctic convoy was unsuccessful, on January 24; from the Portuguese minister in Bucharest, describing the Romanian Vice-Premier's talks with Hitler and Ribbentrop, on January 23; and from the Turkish ambassador in Washington, on Allied disagreements over policies in North Africa and for the post-war period, on January 19.
