Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on North Africa: on the intentions of the Panzer Army under Rommel to withdraw its entire forces to the Tarhuna-Homs position, on January 17; that the Fieldmarshal disagrees with the proposals for withdrawal from Tripoli, and is to arrive in person, on January 20; a German Air Force (GAF) report for January 19, on an Allied spearhead 35 km east-southeast of Garian; that captured papers indicate Garian as the target followed by a thrust northwards to Tripoli; a day report from the 5th Panzer Army for January 17; on arrangements for the transport of petrol in Italian tanker lorries, to be shared between German and Italian troops according to their needs; that the air transport space available has been reduced by its release to the Eastern Front; and that no petrol is to be flown to Tripoli on Kesselring's orders; on the Russian Front: a 4th Air Fleet situation report for January 19, giving details of the front line on the Caucasus and Donets fronts; of a German withdrawal in the Donets area; and that GAF support is requested against strong Soviet forces in the Derkul area; Naval Headlines, covering air and surface operations against blockade runners; the reinforcement and redisposition of U-boats in the Atlantic; and that the last coastal convoy to leave Tripoli will do so on January 19; from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, discussing the U.S. situation, U.S. actions and diplomacy, on December 29; from the Japanese ambassador in Vichy, on Laval's response to Italian demands including an agreement to the hand over of French warships in Toulon, on January 13; from the Japanese minister in Ankara, giving views on the war situation, the attitude of neutral countries, and the duration of the war, on January 11; from the Argentinian chargé in Berlin, on delays in telegrams because of an air raid on Berlin, on January 16; from the Portuguese minister in Stockholm, on Swedish mistrust of Allied accounts of the German position in Russia, on January 15; of the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs' anxiety over the appointment of General Yague to command in Melilla, on January 17; of an enquiry to London on the rumoured removal of the British ambassador to Spain, on January 17; and from the Turkish ambassador in Vichy, on the Bey of Tunis being in correspondence with Hitler, on January 16.
