Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports: a BONIFACE report; on North Africa: of Rommel's response to Marshal Bastico on a proposal to give up the 164th Light Africa Division for protection of the Sfax area, on January 11; on the Russian Front: a German Air Force (GAF) survey for January 12; that Soviet activity south of Lake Lagoda is increasing; and that the 6th Army is coming under heavy Soviet attacks on all fronts; Naval Headlines, covering U-boats being in contact with a tanker convoy south of the Azores; that the move of the Scharnhorst to Norway has been cancelled, and it is expected to return to Gdynia, on January 13; that Toulon Arsenal was ordered to carry out repairs to warships as required by the Germans and Italians; that Admiral Platon is advocating collaboration with the Axis, on January 11; and of an urgent order for the total destruction of all plant and loading installations at Novorossisk, on January 9; from the Japanese ambassador in Berlin, a German account of conversations between Germany, Italy and France, from December 24; from the Japanese ambassador in Vichy, of relations between France and Germany, as of January 8; and of Laval's refusal to accede to an Italian demand for the surrender of the French Fleet in Toulon, on January 8.
