Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on the Southern Russian Front: that the Commander in Chief (C-in-C) of the German Air Force (GAF) orders a new bomber unit to go to the Black Sea to combat Soviet shipping, on January 4; that the GAF are to consult with the army on anti-aircraft protection for the Kerch Straits, on January 4; an evening report on fighting in the North Caucasus, on January 4; and a naval situation report for January 4, describing withdrawal arrangements, but that holding the proposed line is doubtful; on North Africa: a GAF Africa evening report for January 5, noting that a recce shows the advance of enemy reinforcements; that GAF fighters were ordered to escort 7 destroyers carrying troops to Bizerta and Tunis on January 6; German reports of a bombing attack on Sfax harbour, on January 5; that Marshal Bastico seeks Rommel's view as to when to withdraw the Hon garrison, on January 4; that Marshal Bastico tells Rommel to prolong periods of defending his positions and to gain as much time as possible, on January 4; that the Panzer Army boundary has been designated north of the Gabes sector to give Rommel room in Tunisia for supply bases, on January 4; of the Chief Quartermaster (QM) of the Panzer Army's supply priorities, including fuel for Tripoli; that the Chief QM of the Panzer Army seeks shipping to transport supply goods westward from Tripoli, on January 5; and the Panzer Army under Rommel's day report for January 4, including that elements of non-motorised Italian formations have been withdrawn; and that German and Italian formations at Buerat were made mobile by improvisation.
