16 Nov 1942

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on North Africa: of a directive from Kesselring to the German Air Force (GAF) for support of the Panzer Army which cannot otherwise hold its planned position; that the Italian ships Monginevro and Sestriere are loaded with supplies for Bizerta; that sea transport is urgently requested by the Panzer Army for the evacuation of Benghazi; that the GAF aviation fuel stocks in the Arco area are only enough for one day's operations, as of November 16; that the Ground Officer Commanding (GOC) the Panzer Army ordered all Siebel ferries and landing craft in Ras El Ali to go to Benghazi; of the Panzer Army's intention to defer the passing of its rearguard through Benghazi until November 19; that the Allied advance was apparently hindered by rain and mines; that fuel shortages are rendering German troops almost incapable of movement; and that ammunition replenishment is urgently needed; and on Tunisia: a CX report, that the area around Tunis is occupied by Axis forces, as of November 16 (an extract).
