Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on North Africa: of Kesselring's assumption that the Panzer Army will make a stand at El Agheila on November 14; that the German Air Force (GAF) believe the supply lines to be too long for El Agheila, and consider Misurata more likely; that an exit route from Benghazi is to be cleared immediately to prevent German troops being cut off, on November 13; of the withdrawal route of the Panzer Army, on November 13; a Panzer Army report for November 13, that Allied forces are pursuing along the whole front, that fuel needed to be flown to Marawa, and that the loss of motor transport to air attacks is making supply and withdrawal difficult; that Kesselring orders increased GAF attacks on advancing Allied forces from November 14; of Kesselring's appreciation of the situation on November 14, that Allied forces have reached Bone, that no further convoys are en route, and he orders for the Germans to defend to the last man; that GAF Tunis was warned of the possibility of a threat on the flank; that Kesselring calls for information about the locations, strengths and spirit of French and Tunisian forces; that intentions for the 2nd Air Corps' battle unit at Elmas for November 15 include night attacks on Bone airfield; that the Governor and Ground Officer Commanding (GOC) of Tunis were ordered by Vichy to be friendly to the Axis forces; and that the French Admiral Esteva ordered the arrest of suspected Gaullist sympathisers; on the Mediterranean: that the German flotilla at Bizerta was ordered not to attack French warships, and informed that French merchant shipping has been instructed to return to French or neutral ports, on November 13; that the GOC Africa Corps, Nehring, is to take command of the German forces in Tunis, and be replaced by Fehn; and that troops and supplies in Italy originally intended for the Panzer Army are to be diverted to Tunis, on November 13.
