Description

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on North Africa: that further German Air Force (GAF) units were deployed to Tunis on November 10; that due to communications problems, Rommel refuses to take over the command of Italian troops in eastern Cyrenaica, on November 8; of the Panzer Army's reversals and that it continues in retreat on November 9; that all dispensable German personnel and equipment at Tobruk and Benghazi are to be sent to Tripoli; on details of the planned westward deployment of GAF units on November 11, noting that the bulk of their equipment is to be left behind; that an Allied advance is forcing a German evacuation east of Tobruk and El Adem on November 10, with extra transport aircraft being sent to Tobruk to assist; GAF reports suggesting that the Allies are to occupy Tobruk by late on November 12; in the face of the Allied advance, the Panzer Army is to retreat to the west on November 11; of GAF combat plans for November 11; that a German withdrawal west of Agedabia will come possibly as early as November 13; that Kesselring insists late on November 10 that GAF support for the withdrawal of the Panzer Army was a life or death issue and that the British at Sidi Omar should be destroyed or at least delayed; of a successful Beaufighter attack against a Tunis airfield, on November 10; that all Vichy merchant ships are to leave Algiers and Tunis harbours for home-ports in France; that the Panzer Army is pulling back to Tobruk on November 10; of a successful bombing attack by the GAF against an Allied aircraft carrier on November 10; a GAF report for November 9; that a shortage of aviation fuel curtails an airlift from Benghazi, Greece and Crete in support of the Panzer Army, on November 9; a Panzer Army report for November 9; that the Germans are expecting an Allied landing at Philippeville, possibly early on November 10; that the GAF battle HQ at Tunis is to arrange a dawn attack; that Kesselring threatens to court-martial GAF officers retaining transport aircraft in Africa and not returning them to Europe, on November 9; and of the Italian Air Force's (IAF's) 5th Air Corps' planned deployments, on November 10.
