Description

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on North Africa: that the French government instructs the resident-general in Tunis on the re-basing of German Air Force (GAF) aircraft in Tunis on November 9; that no Allied aircraft are in Algiers, as of November 9; that the GAF battle HQ is moving to Tunis on November 9; that a German sea transport office opened in Tunis on November 9; from the German secret service in Vichy, of a German troop build-up near Moulins on November 10; from the German secret service in Madrid, a report from the Spanish General Staff, that the Allies are now near Casablanca where the Gaullists are surrounded, on November 10; from the German secret service in Melila, that the Allies were attacking Nemours and the local French were in high spirits over Allied moves, on November 10; that Gaullists in Oudjda were suppressed by the French Foreign Legion and the Spanish zone was calm, on November 9/10; from the German secret service in Madrid, that Paris was informed about the fighting around Casablanca and Port Lyautey on November 10; and that Tangiers was informed that German and Italian members of the Armistice Commission are attempting to escape into Spanish Morocco by night, on November 10; Naval Headlines; from the Turkish ambassador in Rome, on differences between the Germans and Italians on command duties; that Rommel will take on the Eastern command and Marshal Bastico the Western command including the Tunisian border; and that if U.S. forces move on from Tunis to Libya then Bastico will command the opposition to them, on November 9; and from the Japanese ambassador in Berlin, that the Germans were surprised by the Allied landings in Algiers; that the Axis is reinforcing its air forces in Sicily and Tunis; and on German/French relations, on November 10.
