Description

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on North Africa: of the flying-in of as many aircraft and personnel as possible on November 4; of Allied air raids on Benghazi, with a destroyer being set on fire, and five extra aircraft being retained for defence; on Allied penetrations in the areas of the Trento Division and the 15th Panzer Division, south of Sidi Rahman; that the Panzer Army is withdrawing to Fuka; on North Africa: of heavy German and Italian casualties; that the Africa Corps has been reduced to 32 serviceable tanks; that action is restricted to the area east of Mersa Matruh; and that Italian divisions are withdrawing westwards; Naval Headlines, covering the Prinz Eugen carrying out trials in the Danzig area; that the location of a British wireless telegraphy station on Spitzbergen was given to a U-boat servicing a German meteorological party, with a comment by the First Sea Lord (ISL); details of an Italian convoy in the Mediterranean; and that the fuel-oil situation in Crete is critical.
