26 Aug 1942

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports from the Admiral commanding German Naval Command in Italy: a report giving lengthy excuses for the failure to support the Panzer Army: the main problems cited were British successes and the unreliability of the Italians; on North Africa: that the temporary incapacity of Rommel is to remain a secret, with Kesselring to have unified supreme command over the Panzer Army and German Air Force (GAF), and General Nehring to take command of the Panzer Army, on 24 August; of the Allied order of battle as held by the Panzer Army, on 25 August; and a Panzer Army report for August 24/25; and on Western Europe: that the Germans expect further British landing attempts for prestige purposes, so increased vigilance is to continue, on 22 August.
