Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports: Naval Headlines of August 14, 19, 21, 23 and 24, covering Italian and German activity, and that Allied forces were reported as having landed at Dieppe on August 19; the Japanese ambassador in Berlin reports Ribbentrop's call for closer cooperation in attacking Allied supply lines on August 8; and reports the effects of Allied bombing raids on August 13 (in 2 parts); on the Russian Front: a report from the Japanese ambassador in Berlin on an extensive tour of the whole Front and interviews with senior German officers on August 7 (in 2 parts); that the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs signalled to the Japanese ambassador in Berlin, revealing war plans for disclosure to the Germans, on July 27; of the ambassador's response following a meeting with Ribbentrop, on August 2; the Japanese ambassador in Rome reports views on the war and Churchill's visit to Moscow and reports on a visit by an Italian senior Foreign Ministry official on August 20; on North Africa: the Japanese ambassador in Rome reports preparations for a resumption of the Egyptian campaign, on August 12; the Turkish ambassador in Berlin reports meetings with Hitler and Ribbentrop, on August 16; the Turkish minister in Madrid repeats information from a French source on German forces in occupied France, and on expectations of a serious crisis for the Axis in September, on August 15; of an appreciation by the Japanese minister in Madrid of Allied aims and progress, and recommendations for Japanese policy, on July 29; that the Turkish Foreign Ministry repeats a signal from the Embassy in Kuibyshev on Free French pressure for a second front, on August 20; the Japanese ambassador in Vichy reports on the German attitude and policy towards Laval, on August 15; of the Aga Khan's view of the British political situation, and on India, as told to the Japanese ambassador in Vichy by Laval on August 7; the Japanese ambassador in Vichy repeats Laval's statement on French policy, from July 29; the Turkish ambassador in Tokyo reports that neither Germany nor Italy are satisfied with Japan as an ally, on August 10; the Japanese minister in Budapest reports a discussion with the Hungarian Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs on a second front, on July 27; and of Japanese instructions to their ambassador in Buenos Aires on a peace initiative, on August 3.
