This file includes the following reports on North Africa: that Kesselring, in light of the increasing threat from Allied submarines in the Mediterranean, urges increased vigilance from aircrews on escort or patrol duties, on August 7; a German naval report for all areas for August 8 including German Air Force (GAF) activities in the Mediterranean and North Africa; and a further report that contact has been lost with convoy PQ18; on the Russian Front: a report for August 6 that Army Group A engaged Soviet shipping in the Kerch Straits, that elements are advancing near Timoshenskaya, and of a successful operation north of Voroshilovsk; for Army Group B, that Romanian units reached an area south west of Stalingrad; that the Army Group Centre has come under Soviet tank-supported attacks near Rzhev; and that the Army Group North is under a renewed attack south of Leningrad; on the Russian Front: a report for August 8 that Army Group A reports that Soviet forces are retiring in the Taman area and south of the Kuban River towards Black Sea ports, that infantry forces have reached the upper course of the Protika, and that progress is being made east of Voroshilovsk; and that Army Group B forces advancing towards Stalingrad are encountering increased resistance; the Japanese minister in Lisbon reports Italian expectations of a second front opening up, on August 3; the Japanese minister in Madrid reports the views of the German and Italian ambassadors on the war situation, on August 4; and the Japanese minister in Madrid repeats speculation in Spain and from an intelligence source in London, on the prospects for a second front, on August 4.
