This file includes the following reports on North Africa: that Rommel requests the despatch of Italian flak forces because of the success of British air attacks on supply convoys, on May 22; from the Bulgarian minister in Vichy on U.S. demands concerning Martinique, on May 19; from the Japanese ambassador in Vichy, that Laval seeks Japanese assistance to defend Madagascar against Allied invasion, on May 3 (the Prime Minister (PM) orders this to be shown to Roosevelt); from the Turkish ambassador in Vichy, that Italian threats to French territory have receded, on May 21; and from the Italian ambassador in Santiago, that Chile is upset at U.S. restrictions on the supply of petroleum, on May 18.
