Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes a BONIFACE report that British forces had penetrated Bardia on December 31; and the following BONIFACE reports on the Mediterranean and North Africa: the intentions of the 10th Air Corps in the eastern Mediterranean for January 2, including attacks on Tobruk and supporting the defence of Bardia; that Kesselring required reasons for the unsuccessful defence against attacks on Crete and Salamis on December 31; a German estimate of RAF strength as of December 31; and that additional air reconnaissance aircraft was required by the Fliegerfuehrer Africa to support the Panzer Group's increased demands on January 1. The file also contains the following BONIFACE reports on the Russian Front: a report from the 11th Army for December 30 indicating that Soviet forces were making advances in south-east Crimea; that the Crimean frontline was 15 miles north west of Feodosiya as of January 1; that the German Air Force (GAF) was urgently reinforcing the Kharkov area to combat the Soviet breakthrough on the northern wing of the 6th Army on January 1; that German units were alerted to the danger of Soviet paratroops operating against airfields and GAF ground installations on December 31; that the Air Fleets and 8th Air Corps were instructed to use local inhabitants for construction work for the defence of GAF installations; on German intentions for January 2; that the 4th Air Fleet was to prepare for bombing operations against Soviet forces in front of the 6th Army, and attacks on the landings and movements in the Feodosiya area; that the 8th Air Corps was to concentrate on the area in front of the 9th Army and Kalinin and Torshok; and that leave had been cancelled by the GAF for personnel east of the German frontier on December 31.
