1 Jan 1942

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following BONIFACE reports on North Africa: the Fliegerfuehrer Africa's reports from December 30; a report that British forces had been pushed back by the Africa Corps north east of Agedabia, and that the intention was to move to Merduna but urgently required the Italian air defence battalion on December 31; that the Fliegerfuehrer Africa was subordinated directly to Kesselring instead of the 10th Air Corps with effect from January 1; that the 5th Italian Air Corps was to send fighter aircraft to Libya from December 30; and that the weather had prevented German aircraft based in Greece from providing urgently needed air support for German forces in Bardia on December 31. The file also includes the following BONIFACE reports on the Russian Front: on German intentions for January 2 in Crimea, being that the 11th Army was to continue to clean up Soviet forces that had landed at Feodosiya with the support of the 4th Air Fleet; reports of airborne mine-laying attacks on Feodosiya and Sevastopol harbours and reinforcements for the German Air Force (GAF) in Kharkov; that the 4th and 1st Air Fleets and the 8th Air Corps were to be issued with special Ju88C aircraft for attacking Soviet locomotives on December 31; and that there was to be a redistribution of air reconnaissance areas for units 20f of the 4th Air Fleet on January 2. Also included are BONIFACE reports on a Mediterranean shipping return on January 1; that the Achaia had arrived in Tripoli from Brindisi carrying aviation fuel; and that further supplies had arrived by air from Vetrano, and by land from Tunis.
