Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following BONIFACE reports on North Africa: that support for Crete was to be given lower priority than the main area of operations in the Mediterranean according to a statement by Kesselring on December 25; that the mining of Benghazi, Derna and Tobruk harbours was to continue on December 27; and that all fuel in Sirte was brought in by German aircraft and nothing came from Tripoli as of December 26. This file also includes the following BONIFACE intelligence on the Russian Front: a complaint from the 4th Air Fleet about the withdrawal of supplies from the southern area for use on the Moscow Front on December 25; a report of a Soviet breakthrough of the 2nd Army's right flank north of Tim, noting that the breach was expected to extend and that the centre of the army's forces were making a planned withdrawal, while the 1st SS Brigade was under attack and in a critical position on December 25; that the German front line on December 24 was under Soviet attack; that the 8th Air Corps in north Smolensk was to receive at least eight serviceable aircraft together with servicing personnel, and aircraft to carry army draftees as of December 26; that the importance of Soviet locomotives as air targets was stressed to the Air Officer Commanding (AOC) North Norway and Fliegerfuehrer North (East) on December 25; and that the 4th Air Fleet reported a Soviet attempt to land forces on Kerch peninsula in the face of the 54th Army Corps on December 26-27.
