Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on the Russian Front: that the 4th Air Fleet reported a Soviet breakthrough on the right wing of the 17th Army, and that the battle was still in progress on December 14; that there was increased Soviet activity against forward positions of the 4th Army and the 20th Army, the 4th Panzer Group being under attack, the situation of the 7th Army being critical, the 5th Army Corps withdrawing according to plan, and the 3rd Panzer Group having repelled attacks as of December 13; a report from the 4th Air Fleet that the right wing of the 17th Army was under strong Soviet attack, but was supported by the 4th Air Corps; a report on the Moscow sector for December 14, that the 35th Infantry Division was under strong Soviet attack north of Gorki, the 56th Army Corps had withdrawn to a line through Klin, and the 7th Panzer Division had been relieved; reports of December 13 indicating Soviet successes in the Orel sector; and evidence of a withdrawal of the 8th Air Corps from the Moscow Front on December 13, possibly to be relieved by the 1st Air Corps. The file also contains the following intelligence from North Africa: that the 10th Air Corps had been instructed by Goering to report on required improvements in the performance of torpedo-carrying aircraft on December 12; that the 10th Air Corps had requested air transport space for daily fuel, ammunition and spares requirements; that the 10th Air Corps was to carry out air raids on Tobruk from Greece on December 16; a report of the serviceability and availability of reserve aircraft sent by the 10th Air Corps; that aviation fuel was to be sent from Tunis to Tripoli on December 13; that dive bomber attacks had destroyed British concentrations in front of the German Africa Corps and that the Panzer Group withdrew according to plan; and on the 10th Air Corps' intentions, the critical fuel situation, and the short supply of ammunition for ME109 aircraft. Also included in this file are the intentions of Panzer Group Africa including the defence of the Gazala area and the fortification of Derna; a report of Ju52 transport aircraft being sent to Derna; intelligence that Kesselring had arrived in Derna on December 16; that the Commander-in-Chief (CinC) south had arrived in Derna on December 16; an Italian report of British naval forces in the Mediterranean on December 16; a report on the relief of some units of the 8th Air Corps by some units of the 1st Air Corps on December 13; the route of convoys to Tripoli and Benghazi from December 17 was protected by aircraft of the 10th Air Corps; and a note on the allocation of small arms to German units in north Norway for combating partisans from December 16.
