Defence Relations with the USA

A file of correspondence and telegrams between the British and United States governments concerning a proposed Joint Chiefs of Staff meeting to discuss the military preparedness of both countries in the event of war with the Soviet Union, and the potential economic consequences of such a war. Subjects covered in the correspondence include the necessity of having the conference; a summary of the major groupings of opinion within the U.S. government; reports summarising the British and American oil reserves and preparedness for war; discussion of American plans for reorganisation and redeployment of the Allied army of occupation in Germany; discussion of the British role in any future war; and discussion of the French requests for representation at the conference that eventually caused the cancellation of the meeting.
